Replacing Distribution Panels? When Should I Do This?
In our last blog, we discussed how vital distribution panels can be to your everyday life. Without them, none of your most precious possessions would be able to receive power. More importantly, the items that you need to feed yourself and wash your clothes, would not have enough power to support their proper function. With this being said, it is clear that distribution panels are important, but do you know when to replace them?
Of course, your distribution panels won’t need to be replaced like your floorboards or even your insulation. But, they may have to be replaced nonetheless.
In this blog, we will be discussing when you should replace your distribution panels and why. Hopefully, by reading this blog, you will have a better understanding of your electrical units and why it is important to stay updated with the number of electrical appliances you are using.
Circuit Breakers and “Tripping”
Circuit breakers, or distribution panels, are responsible for distributing the right amount of power to each of the circuits in your home or business. Breakers are able to not only provide your property power, but each is able to control the amount of power it is subsidizing throughout your building. Raw electrical power would destroy most of your appliances. Thanks to distribution panels, the right amount of power can be siphoned and distributed to the appropriate circuits where your items are being used. As explained in our last blog, different products require different amounts of power to function; your oven uses more electricity than your kitchen toaster.
“Tripping” occurs when there is an electrical shortage or an overcurrent incident. You want to prevent tripping mainly because it can damage your electrical wiring. And, of course, electrical outages are annoying. Tripping can happen when your breaker cannot keep up with the amount of energy you are requiring. Of course, if your breaker keeps tripping out, you may want to look into replacing it.
When To Replace Your Distribution Panel
There are two reasons you would want to replace your distribution panel or even add another panel. For one, if you want to add circuit breakers but have reached the capacity of your current breaker panel, a replacement may be due. If you have reached capacity on your current breaker, your electrical products won’t receive the energy they need and will not work. The second reason you would want to replace your electrical panel is if you want to upgrade from fuses to circuit breakers.
It is important to remember that just because you get a new panel, it does not mean you will receive more power for your home or business. Specifically with homes, if you need more power overall, you will need to call a professional electrician to receive an upgrade. In order to receive an upgrade, you will need a new panel as well as new cables and a new electrical meter. This is mainly due to the fact that more power means that there needs to be different items to transport the power (cables) and monitor it (meter).
Why Replacements Are Ideal
You will want to make replacements for your electrical panels if it is obvious that your power is insufficient.
